Immersion heaters create hot water and rely on a heating element, placed inside a water cylinder that heats up water directly. There are two main types of immersion heaters, an indirect cylinder usually has just one immersion heater, and therefore one element, typically located at the top of the water tank. A direct hot water cylinder however is likely to have two immersion heaters, with one situated at the top and another at the bottom.
TIP: Hot water tanks should be adequately insulated in order ensure water is being heated efficiently.
